This Moment Matters: How Reiki Can Help Parents and Kids Reset

Life can feel busy and overwhelming, especially for families juggling work, school, and everything in between. Reiki is a gentle mindfulness practice that uses the power of touch to calm the body and mind. It’s based on the idea that energy flows through our bodies, and when that flow is blocked or out of balance — often because of stress — it can affect how we feel physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Research shows that simple, caring touch releases serotonin and dopamine in the brain, helping to regulate emotions, improve mood, and promote relaxation. Reiki gives us a practical way to use this natural healing power at home.

Center therapist and Reiki practitioner Liz Liptak shares some of her tips for incorporating Reiki into your everyday life.

Tap Into Your Healing Touch

Reiki is a simple yet powerful practice under the mindfulness umbrella. While there are some standard hand positions taught from different lineages, there’s no “perfect” way to do it. Trust your instincts, and experiment with what feels most supportive for you and your child.

Over time, Reiki can become a grounding family ritual, whether it’s part of a bedtime routine or a moment of calm between the school day and homework.

Here are two ways to use it in your day-to-day life:

A Simple Daily Grounding Practice for You

At the end of a long day, or when your mind feels unsettled, try this quick grounding exercise:

  1. Sit comfortably and place your hands, palms down, on top of your head. The hands can be placed one behind the other or side by side, whatever feels most comfortable!

  2. Close your eyes and take a few slow breaths, turning your attention inward.

  3. Rest here for a few minutes, letting your body and mind settle.

This practice can be especially helpful before bedtime or after a stressful moment.

Part of a Soothing Bedtime Routine for Kids

Reiki can also help children wind down at bedtime or during transitions. Here’s a calming sequence you can try:

  1. Place your hands horizontally across your child’s chest.

  2. Then move your hands under their rib cage.

  3. Finally, place your hands horizontally in line with their belly button.

Hold each position for a few minutes, using a light, comfortable touch. This routine not only brings a sense of calm but can also help settle the digestive system.

Reiki doesn’t have to be complicated — just a few mindful moments of connection can make a difference. It’s a simple practice that can bring more calm and balance to your family’s daily rhythm.
