Treatment Plans As Unique As You Are…
There is no one-size-fits-all at The Center for Family Well-Being! Grounded in scientifically-backed Western psychotherapy practices and proven Eastern wisdom healing traditions and therapies, our aim is to offer collaborative, integrative, and holistic whole-person treatment. We’re proud to offer individualized, expert care to every child, teen, adult, couple, and family.
What We Treat & How
We work with a host of life's challenges: anxiety; depression; ADHD; self-regulation (emotional and behavioral); distinct learning styles; chronic illness; grief and loss; trauma; issues of identity across the life span; highly sensitive kids, teens, and adults; family, school, career, and life transitions; and more.
The Center’s skilled therapists address these unique needs through one-on-one, group, couples, and family therapy, as well as parent guidance/coaching, and school consultation and advocacy. Because we prioritize whole-person care, we also partner with functional nutritionists, Ayurvedic practitioners, acupuncturists, integrative psychiatrists, neurofeedback providers, and other yoga, energy, and body-centered therapists. Each kind of therapy we offer is a doorway for greater clarity, connectedness, and well-being!
Regardless of where you are in the lifespan, our work is grounded in helping individuals move forward with intention and clarity, rather than urgency or fear. We offer therapy and support that honors the many roles and transitions we move through over a lifetime:
Ages & Stages: Meeting You Exactly Where You Are
-
We believe in nourishing the roots of well-being from the very beginning. Our work with young children focuses primarily on supporting caregivers through parent coaching and groups that emphasize connection, emotional attunement, and gentle, respectful parenting approaches from infancy onward.
-
This stage often brings big emotional and behavioral shifts — at home, at school, and socially. We offer individual therapy, age-specific In Tune group therapy programs, and parent guidance to help children build emotional awareness, self-regulation, and resilience. We also provide school consultation and advocacy, and begin introducing developmentally appropriate mind-body tools.
-
Adolescence is a time of rapid change, identity exploration, and increasing independence. Alongside individual therapy, we offer teen-focused In Tune group therapy programs, as well as workshops and events that support emotional regulation, peer relationships, and navigation of academic, social, and life transitions. We also share mind-body tools that teens can use independently to manage stress, emotions, and overwhelm.
-
Young adulthood often brings questions around identity, direction, relationships, and independence. Our therapists support young adults through individual therapy focused on emotional well-being, self-understanding, and navigating transitions related to school, career, relationships, and emerging adulthood.
-
Relationships evolve through many stages of life, and each stage brings its own challenges. We offer couples therapy to support communication, connection, and repair, whether partners are navigating life transitions, parenting stress, identity shifts, or long-standing patterns they’re ready to change.
-
We offer parent coaching and guidance sessions that focus on strengthening connection, increasing confidence, and understanding what your child’s behavior is communicating. Our work with parents is collaborative, practical, and holistic — helping you develop tools that support your child’s growth, your family’s cohesion, and your own well-being.
-
Family life is dynamic and complex. We work with families to strengthen relationships, improve communication, and support healthier patterns across generations. Family therapy can be especially helpful during periods of transition, conflict, or change affecting one or more family members.
-
We support adults navigating the emotional, relational, spiritual, and practical shifts that often emerge in midlife and beyond. These moments may include changes in identity or responsibility; caring for aging parents or adult children; or questions about purpose, meaning, and planning for what comes next.
Several Center therapists provide experienced, holistic care through Aging with Intention and Life Transitions offerings:Individual support sessions for caregivers of aging parents
Parent coaching for adults parenting adult children
Life review and reflection for clients in their 50s and beyond
Thoughtful guidance around end-of-career and role transitions
Emotional, relational, and practical support related to end-of-life planning
Effective, whole-person treatment relies on a variety of therapeutic paths.
Here are some of the valuable therapies we use at the Center:
Talk Therapies
-
Cognitive-behavioral therapy
Psychodynamic therapy.
Brain-Based Relational Therapies
-
Brainspotting: an innovative and relatively recent mind-body approach, which harnesses the visual field and the brain’s innate capacity to re-process and heal disturbing life events.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing): uses rapid eye movement and bi-lateral stimuli to allow the old “thinking” brain to process distressing experiences in new ways.
Heartmath: an evidenced-based approach to establishing emotional well-being and balance by employing the power of heart rhythm coherence.
Energy Therapies
-
Reiki therapy is a gentle healing technique that promotes deep relaxation, balance, and tranquility.
Essential oils prompt responses that can alter mood and cultivate vitality and well-being. We offer high-grade, comprehensively researched, and scientifically formulated pure essential oils.
Qi gong is an evidence-based mind-body-spirit practice that integrates gentle postures, movement, and breathing.
Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) uses gentle taps on distinct energy pathways in the body to relieve distress stemming from charged emotional issues.
Expressive Therapies
Animal Assisted Therapies
-
Lisa Oakley heads up our animal-assisted therapy program with her certified therapy dog, Manny, and rabbit, Theodore.
Animal-assisted therapy can be used in both individual and group sessions, integrated into our work with kids and teens with anxiety and mood disorders as well as social skill challenges.
Ayurvedic Therapies
-
Ayurveda, one of the world’s most ancient (over 5,000 years old) and sophisticated mind-body health systems, focuses on lifestyle, nutrition, exercise, relaxation, self-study, and herbs to alleviate many mental and physical health challenges, including anxiety, depression, digestive problems, weight challenges, allergies, PMS and other hormonal issues, infertility, and menopause.
Mindful Awareness-Based Therapies
-
Yoga, breath, and body-based movement therapy
Meditation and mindfulness practices (offered in individual and group sessions)
Sound awareness therapies: the ancient practice of creating sound vibrations — whether through chant, mantra, vocal toning, or deeply appreciating healing sounds through music or nature.
Nature-Based Therapies
-
Walk-and-Talk Therapy: Some Center therapists offer outdoor sessions. These walk-and-talk sessions, which take place on the trails in nearby Rock Creek Park, bring the added benefit of physical movement and nature into the therapeutic process. Our clients have found that working on personal goals while spending time in the calm and peaceful setting of the woods can be both invigorating and healing. The walk-and-talk sessions are available to people of all ages — children as well as adults.
Outdoor Sessions: For those who prefer not to walk, we offer seated outdoor sessions in our “outdoor living room and play space” for all ages at the Center.
Functional Nutrition Counseling
-
Because food and lifestyle choices can impact depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other mental health conditions, we offer functional nutrition counseling to support clients and their families.
"When we do not have words to convey our sensations, feelings, or thoughts, we cannot simply 'name it to tame it'. But we can use implicit communication — movement, rhythm, sound, image, enactment, and play — to 'express it to address it'. This is the transformative and restorative role of expressive arts, to provide a voice when language is unavailable or impossible."
— Dr. Cathy Malchiodi, trauma-informed expressive arts therapist and researcher
