7 Reasons Why Summer Is a Great Time to Prioritize Your Family’s Mental Health

Summer is almost here! For many of our Center families, that means a mix of travel plans, summer clubs, camps, and much-needed downtime.

With routines shifting and calendars filling up, it’s natural to wonder: Where does therapy fit into all of this? Or, more importantly: Why should it?

While summer often feels like a break from the usual, it can actually be a powerful time to deepen therapeutic work — for kids, teens, adults, and families alike. Here are a few reasons why continuing therapy during the summer months can be not only helpful, but even more impactful than you might expect:

  1. Extra time = deeper work: Summer offers us space for real self-discovery! For kids and teens, it’s an ideal time to explore issues more deeply or work on goals that often get sidelined during the school year. Teens especially can use this time to reflect on who they are, what they value, and how they want to show up in the world.

  2. Improve family dynamics: More time at home can mean more opportunities for connection — and for conflict. Therapy can support kids and parents through the challenges and joys of increased togetherness.

  3. Prevent the summer slide: For children and teens who’ve been making progress, summer breaks can disrupt momentum. Ongoing therapy helps maintain the gains they’ve made and reinforces tools they’re still learning.

  4. Maintain consistency: When school is out and routines shift, therapy can be a steady anchor. It's a familiar, dependable space to process emotions and life transitions.

  5. Make the most of group support: Summer often brings a natural pause in busyness, making it a great time to try a new therapy group or workshop. With fewer scheduling conflicts, many find group work especially fruitful during the summer months!

  6. Alleviate back-to-school jitters: Therapy can help children and teens prepare emotionally for the transition back to school — building confidence, managing anticipatory anxiety, and setting healthy intentions for the year ahead.

  7. Simplify scheduling: Without the rush of school drop-offs, extracurriculars, and packed calendars, summer can offer more flexible and convenient appointment times — making it easier to prioritize mental health without the usual time crunch.

However your summer unfolds, the Center is here to help you make the most of it! Whether it’s for an individual session, parent coaching, or one of our summer groups or events, this season offers a unique opportunity to slow down, check in, and grow. We hope you'll join us!
